Seaside date for British Rally Championship opener Posted On 22 October 2021

Motorsport stars expected to head to Essex for Corbeau Seats Rally

Chelmsford Motor Club and council officials have welcomed the news that the opening round of next year’s British Rally Championship will be the Corbeau Seats Rally Tendring and Clacton.

The leading names in British rallying will be returning to Essex for the third time, and Corbeau Seats managing director Victor Lee said: ”We’re delighted to be back. Inclusion in the BRC is a feather in the cap for Chelmsford Motor club, and also reflects the fantastic support the club enjoys from Tendring Council and the local community.”

The announcement comes three years after the rally made use of new legislation allowing closed road racing in England to host five stages across the Tendring countryside.

On that occasion, Clacton was only used as a staging area, but on April 23rd and 24th two new spectator stages will be held along the seafront on the Saturday evening, followed by three loops of four closed-road stages through the surrounding lanes on the Sunday.

Event director Tony Clements, of the Chelmsford Motor Club, told the Chelmsford Weekly News: “Our first closed road events received a great response from the rally crews and most strikingly from the people of Tendring and Clacton who enjoyed a family-friendly day out.

“Our partners and local communities have been waiting patiently for the rally to return and we’re delighted to bring a round of the prestigious British Rally Championship to the area, as well as catering for our clubman competitors.”

Tendring Council were also delighted and Alex Porter, the cabinet member for leisure and tourism, was reported as saying: “To be a round of the BRC is fantastic for the rally as it will attract stellar drivers.

“However, to be the opening round of the competition is undoubtedly a real coup which will hopefully draw even more spectators to the event and our beautiful district.

“The evening stage along Clacton seafront on the Saturday is an added attraction and incentive for people to come and make a weekend of their visit – boosting local businesses”.
