Victorian drama being filmed in Maldon’s Promenade Park
Anyone taking a stroll through Maldon this week might be forgiven for wondering why there are two large marquees in Promenade Park, and why there was a Victorian air about the place.
It’s because a major Apple Original production, The Essex Serpent, is being filmed in town and has literally pitched its tents on the Prom.
The six-part series is an adaptation of Sarah Perry’s novel about a widow who, after the end of an abusive relationship, moves from London to a small Essex village and becomes intrigued by a local superstition the area is haunted by a sea monster.
The stars are familiar names on both small and big screen. Tom Hiddleston, better known as Loki in Marvel’s blockbuster Avengers movies series, earned rave reviews and set hearts fluttering for his performance in the updated version of John Le Carre’s The Night Manager, while Claire Danes has featured in the hugely-popular Homeland and played Juliet in Baz Luhrmann’s, Romeo and Juliet.
However, a spokesman for Maldon Council was quick to stress that strict Covid guidelines would be observed, both on set and for any star-gazers.
In a statement, the spokesman said: “We are delighted that the production company has chosen the Maldon district as one of their locations for a new six-part drama.
“We have an enviable reputation for being extremely film-friendly and this production follows in the footsteps of many others who have filmed here.
“They will be operating in line with the Government’s guidelines which legally permit them to undertake Covid-secure film and television production.
“They have a sizeable base on Promenade Park and will minimise any disruption during their filming, ensuring safety can be maintained at all times.
“We would remind everyone that, whilst this is clearly exciting, social distancing must still be maintained at all times.”
